Machinga
Machinga means mountains and the Machinga people live in Southeastern Tanzania in a mountainous area inland from the Indian Ocean between Lindi and Kilwa Kivinje. This people group, almost 100% Sunni Muslim with little Christian witness, is considered unevangelized and unreached. Pray that God’s Word be available in oral and written form in the Machinga language, and that it would produce much fruit.
Makhuwa-Metto (Makua)
The Makhuwa-Metto (Makua) people number 1,500,000 and are located in southern Tanzania and on the island of Pemba. Most Makhuwa-Metto hold to traditional animistic practices, and the belief that their ancestors originated on a sacred mountain, Mount Namuli. The Makhuwa-Metto leaders and gatekeepers keep a reproducing witness away from their people. Pray for bridges of the Gospel to the Makhuwa-Metto.
Ngindo
The Ngindo, referred to as being “at home in the forest,” live in southern Tanzania just west of the Indian Ocean coast. Combining Islam with their animistic beliefs, they are less than 2% evangelized. Hearing the Good News of Christ, pray that they will be like trees planted by streams of water yielding spiritual fruit.
Shambala
The Shambala people, located in northeastern Tanzania on the west Usambara mountain range, experience the problem of over-population because of their fear of the plains. While most are Sunni Muslim, Shambala beliefs still center on ancestor worship with influential rainmakers. Pray that the Shambala would come to know the fear of the Lord rather than of rainmakers, ancestors or Islamic beliefs.
Yao of Tanzania
A large river separates the 500,000 Yao of Tanzania from those of Mozambique making them almost two distinct people groups. Being Yao is synonymous with being a Muslim, but is mixed with their pre-Islamic animist beliefs of witchcraft and ancestral worship. Slave-trading with Arabs brought Islam and influenced their resistance to Christianity. Pray for an increased receptivity toward the message of Jesus’ life and love. |
