Serving in northern Mozambique becomes more difficult as missionaries must learn Portuguese and then a tribal language. Access to reach the villages and the people takes determination as one must travel over almost impassable roads and bridges. Please pray for missionaries to come and take up this task of seeing Christ the Hope of Glory indwelling the peoples of northern Mozambique.

Makonde
Living in northern Mozambique the Makonde people are an unreached people of approximately 400,000. Traditionally they have a Catholic influence, although animism and witchcraft control their hearts and minds. Difficult to penetrate because of their strong tribal identity, the Makonde need to hear of the difference a personal relationship with Christ can make. God’s Word says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Pray for missionaries to come and work among the Makonde of Mozambique. Ask for open Makonde’s hearts and homes to the Good News of Christ.

Makhuwa Nahara
The Makhuwa Nahara people live along the coast of Mozambique and number 500,000. Traditionally folk Islamic in belief, they live off the sea and navigate the coastal trade routes between Mozambique and Tanzania. They have a reputation as liars and thieves, and their lives are dominated by fear as they live in a culture steeped in witchcraft, deception and mistrust. Islam also holds these people captive to futile efforts to gain favor with God. Jesus said “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Pray that the Makhuwa Nahara would come to know the truth of the Lord Jesus who can take away their fear and give them hope.

Yao of Mozambique
A large river separates the Yao of Mozambique from the Yao of Tanzania making them almost two distinct people groups. The Yao in Mozambique, resistant to the Good News of Christ, have only about 3 out of every 10,000 who are evangelical Christians. To be Yao is to be Muslim and presents a substantial barrier to the Good News of Christ. Although portions of scripture have been translated, pray that the entire Bible would be translated into Yao. Jesus said “Anyone who does not cary his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” Pray that many Yao would take the giant leap of faith and follow Christ and that a church planting movement would result.
