Kwanyama
Situated in the far north of Namibia is the largest tribe, the Kwanyama people. Traditionally involved in agriculture and cattle herding, their religion varies from a traditional belief in a Supreme Being combined with worship of ancestral spirits and magic to some evidence of Christianity. Pray for a clear understanding of what it means to be Christian.
Luyana
The Luyana people group are one of five tribes in the Okavango region of Namibia who traditionally live along the Kavango River. Fishing, hunting, raising cattle and woodcarving are sources of survival for them. The Luyana practice ancestor worship, sorcery and witchcraft along with observing some elements of Christianity. Pray that the Luyana would come to faith in Christ.
Herero of Namibia
The Herero people of Namibia in Africa—a pastoral cattle breeding nation, popularly known for the women wearing long Victorian gowns introduced by German missionaries in the 1800s—maintain strong tribal traditions. These Bantu-speaking people subsist on herding for meat and milk. Today they combine Christian dogma with ancestor worship and magical ceremonies. Pray for the truth of the Gospel to penetrate the Herero.
Damara
The traditional homeland of the Damara people is located northwest of Windhoek, Namibia. However, many have moved to farms and towns to obtain employment. Although many practice traditional African religion and show no understanding of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, there was past missionary work. Pray that the Damara would embrace Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Namibian Coloureds
The Namibian Coloureds migrated north from South Africa, as Namibia was once part of South Africa. They have a unique culture resulting from their mixed descent from African, European, and Asian origins. Many live around the Namibian cities and towns. Most are lost and deceived by empty association with Christianity. Pray that God would open the hearts of the Namibian Coloureds.
