Thanking God for the "little old
ladies".
The Tswana team of Southern Africa has had a
missionary in northeast Botswana in a village called Nata for 4 years now.
The team is trying to start a Baptist Church amidst the Bushmen people group.
In those 4 years the missionary, working with teams of Zambian
pastors-in-training has started 4 or 5 small cell groups. Each cell
meets a couple times a week and all cells come together for a
"church" meeting on Sunday.
One of the great joys of our work has been the
"little old ladies" that comprise the core of some of these cells.
It's been amazing to see their hearts and minds open up to the truth of God's
Word in the past few years. Last month two of our little old ladies
graduated into God's Kingdom - Mrs. Mokwakwa and Mrs. Kepaletswe were
respectively around 95 and 65 years old. In our last meeting on earth
Mrs. Mokwakwa was lamenting her various aches, pains, and disabilities and
looking forward to leaving them all behind when she entered heaven. Two
days later she had a massive stroke and entered into her reward.
A few days ago we also said farewell to our oldest
little old lady. Her I.D. says she was born in 1902, but who really
knows for sure. Her name is Mrs. Gibe. For 4 years she sat very
attentively at her cell group meetings seemingly trying to absorb as much as
she possible could from God's Word. Mrs. Gibe has moved 300 kilometers
north to live her last years with her son and his family.
There have been times in this ministry when
we've
wondered what God is doing and why He seems to be doing it so slowly - Are the
people understanding? Is God still working here in Nata? On one of
those days when we were questioning our need to still be here
in Nata God brought us a reality check straight from the mouth of Mrs. Gibe.
After our usual cell meeting Mrs. Gibe chose to speak up in her whispery,
weak, 100 year old voice. She said: " I just want to thank God
that He allowed me to live long enough to hear the good news of Jesus Christ
and become a part of His kingdom."
Wow! What a blessing to be involved in such
a work. Thanking God for the "little old ladies".
